NEWS FLASH! Your organic skin care products may not be that organic. Products such as Eminence Organics that have been toting high dollar marketing and advertisingfor their “organic line” along with several other companies are under investigation for their “widespread and blatantly deceptive labeling practices of leading “Organic” personal care brands, in violation of USDA NOP regulations.” (ouch)
“The complaint, filed collectively on behalf of 50 million consumers of organic products, argues that products such as liquid soaps, body washes, facial cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizing lotions, lip balms, make-up and other cosmetic products produced by twelve different corporations have been advertised, labeled and marketed as “Organic” or “Organics” when, in fact, the products are not “Organic” as understood by reasonable consumers.”
SO, here at Beauty at Any Age is Beauty – we are going on strike. Thats right. We are on strike. We are boycotting “Organic Body Care Fraud.” We just can’t take it anymore. We just feel so….. so…… USED. TO find out that J.A.S.O.N. was just lying all along! I think I might of had some weird crush on who ever that J.A.S.O.N. was back in the day. Faker.
A big thank you to Organic Consumers for shedding light on the issues. They prepared lists of who not to buy and who to buy (which was a comforting light at the end of a dark tunnel)… I mean, Kiss My Face? You have even popped up at regular grocery stores in the last couple of years. Sell out.
Basically, in a nut shell- USDA Organic is the gold standard for whether or not a body care product truly is organic. What we learned from the article is that underneath the USDA label, there are a plethora of ways to work the system and get an “organic stamp” on your products. When looking for organic products look for the USDA Certified Organic logo on the product which means the product is 98% pure organic – anything from 95% to 85% can carry the word Organic as Organic Skin Care but the label must show what ingredients are organic and what is not. It’s best to look for certified organic ingredients certified organic means that they come from state / federal (usda) approved farms. When it just says organic it can come from any location that farms organic but does not have the requirements that certified farms have imposed on them by the state and federal (usda) organic farming requirements to carry that certification. If a skin care line that clams to be Organic and does not have their ingredients listed what is and what is not organic RUN! If a company clams 100% organic and do not break down what is organic and not organic ingredient without a government certification as organic like USDA Organic RUN! There also is no such thing as 100% organic the best you can hope to ever achieve is 98% organic USDA Certified.
Who made the USDA approved list? Dr Bronners, Earth Mama Angel Baby, and Organic Essence to name a few. For a complete list, click here.
We will continue to fight the good fight – as we always do. Bringing you the truth so you can make conscious choices about what to put on your body. Organic or not, that is your prerogative…but living in integrity to support an industry that was founded upon preserving integrity? Come on. What do you have to say for yourselves? We say it might be time to take a time out to sit and think about what you did. Until then, the Pickett line remains.
