Question: Many of your products contain silicones and your lift serum contains butylene glycol. I have read that these ingredients are detrimental to the skin. Why have you put them into your products, and how do you see them as benefitting the skin if used on a lomg-term basis? Paula A
Hi Paula,
Thank you for asking your Question there is a lot of miss information on the Internet and in print. Many times companies of other ingredients will use there power to and being a campaign against other ingredients that they want to take market share from. Others claim to be experts and they really are not. They just pick up untruths off the Internet or article andjust keep repeating it without doing the research. I will tell you the truth as we are an ethical company and as we say our ingredients are non-toxic and non-carcinogen. When I am formulating a product with my chemist we are focus on it being healthy, highly effective and only using what is best for the formulation to work properly and safely.
Butylene Glycol– it is not made from petroleum (oil) that is an un-true statement that is all over the Internet.
How it is made; By the fermentation of corn and or other carbohydrate substrates comes the word glycol caused by the fermentation process (organic). Glyol: Any of various alcohols containing two hydroxyl groups. Any of a class of organic compounds belonging to the alcohol family; in the molecule of a glycol, two hydroxyl (OH) groups are attached to different carbon atoms
A clear, almost colorless liquid made and when placed on the skin or ingested it is quickly broken down into a gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, a naturally occurring compound found in the body human central nervous system, as in wine, beef, and small citrus fruits.
Non-Toxic
Non-Carcinogen
Irritant; Can irritate the skin and eyes if used in a formulation over 45%; recommended concentration is up to 9% in a solution. Our consignation is no more than 0.5% in the total formulation. Large quantities must be inhaled in its raw powder form to cause lung irritation, not in creams or any liquid form.
What is it used for? It keeps ingredients from separating becoming a bunch of blobs and non-effective formulation and a good skin conditioner.
Approved by; the FDA (can be used as a synthetic flavoring and adjuvant for direct addition to food) and Cosmetic Safety Council, EU Cosmetic Safety and Canada Health (which is the strictest in the world with the EU)
Most non professionals get this mixed up with other Gycol ingredients such as below:
Ethylene Gycol:Used in Automotive Antifreeze – once ingested it well finely oxidize into the toxic Oxalica Acid which can lead to death but large quantities in a short amount of time is consumed. Biggest danger is it has a sweet taste and animals and children well consume large quantities because of its sweet taste. – We do not use this ingredient!
Propylene Glycol: is considered Recognized As Safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and it is used as an humectant (E1520), solvent, and preservative in food and for tobacco products. It is also used in pharmaceutical and personal care products. Propylene glycol is a solvent in many pharmaceuticals, including oral, injectable and topical formulations, such as for diazepam and lorazepam that are insoluble in water, use propylene glycol as a solvent in their clinical, injectable forms. The acute oral toxicity of propylene glycol is very low, and large quantities are required to cause perceptible health damage in humans; propylene glycol is metabolized in the human body into pyruvic acid (a normal part of the glucose-metabolism process, readily converted to energy), acetic acid (handled by ethanol-metabolism), lactic acid (a normal acid generally abundant during digestion), and propionaldehyde (a potentially hazardous substance) – We do not use this product!
Silicones and why they are used:
Cyclopentasiloxane; Used to spread the ingredients evenly without friction across the skin so there is a uniform distribution and penetration of actives. It is water-thin does not penetrate the skin, evaporates and breaks down quickly and naturally helps to make the skin soft. Water and multiple emollients would have to be introduced to the formulation to evenly spread and suspend the ingredients. It is non-toxic, non-carcinogen, does not clog pours and is not absorbed into the skin.
Dimethicone; Helps the skin to retain its natural moisture which is very important because it aids the skin to renew after it sloughs off dead cells. It offers the skin a very high protection, moisturizing and softening of the skin that no other ingredient can do. It is non-toxic, non-carcinogen and does not penetrate the skin. Known as a PDMS (silicone) it can be found in many processed foods and fast food items such as McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets] and Wendy’s French fries.
Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Cosspolymer; A emulsifier keeping the formulation stable and ingredients suspended for even distribution. Studies have shown it assist in reducing the appearance of wrinkles up to 84% helping to giving the skin a smooth, silky look and feel. It is non-toxic, breaks down quickly and not absorbed
Our Silicones are natural based, medical grade, (Not a Petroleum by Product) non-irritating, and Non-Toxic, does not penetrate the skin or clog pores, no allergic reactions, good for sensitive skin and does not cause breakouts. Always follow application / usage instruction on back of label.
These combinations of Natural Based Silicones are used to soften and reduce the appearance of scar tissue by dermatologist and plastic surgeons. By softening the damaged skin and protecting it from dehydration.
All of our ingredients are approved by FDA, Cosmetic Safety Board and Cosmetic Ingredient Review, EU cosmetic standards, and the Canada Health Department and must meet my standards as a safe non-toxic and non-carcinogen ingredient.
The final decision is yours and yours alone on what products is best for your skin, skin type and health. I hope that this has cleared up some of the miss communication and non-truths about ingredients are out there. I have done extensive research on my own and with our chemist to insure that every ingredient in our products is safe, non-toxic and non-carcinogen. In fact I meet with our chemist last week on a list of supposed new ingredients that clam to be as good as silicone but with further research and looking for the truth to this day there is no ingredient better than this group of silicones to do the job that they do to protect the skin, ease the appearance of scares and wrinkles, prevent flecking of dry skin, moisturize, evenly spread ingredients without friction, soften and smooth the skin, non-toxic, non-irritating and does not clog pores or acne. One other benefit is that they work as a makeup primer in our products so your makeup glides on, does not clump, and stays in place.
